How Writing Ruined My Wife—I’ve been Sucked into Social Media!

By Kirk Melson

As you know by now, I’m an engineer. I use a computer as a tool—for work. If I want to get social (and I rarely do) I go to a movie or have dinner with friends. My life used to be divided into nice, manageable compartments. Now, not so much. I've been sucked into social media.

With a writing wife, my computer has now become a social gathering place. The compartments in my life are getting jumbled, and that makes me just a tad uncomfortable. I was more than satisfied with my social life before.

Just don’t tell Edie.

My *Man Card* is official and
up to date!
Now I feel obligated to take part. All this gadding about she’s doing has caused my protective streak to kick in. And, whether you know it or not, my man card is current, I keep it on me, and for good measure I’ve grown a mustache.

Since part of my job as husband is to support said wife—I mean, I have to let my Facebook friends know when something cool happens—I’ve also had to join the social networking party.

So I’ve now got a Facebook account…but only to support her.

I share updates about her books, speaking engagements, and general publishing successes.

That of course has made me visible…online…to other people.

Not a comfortable place. Sure I’ve been able to reconnect with some old friends, but that’s not why I’m on here—really.

She still hasn’t convinced me to join Twitter, but I can feel the pull in that direction.

So I have to ask, are there any other spouses (or even reluctant writers) who find themselves sucked into the social media universe? Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s caved and is now forced to do a little discreet bragging!

  1. I went social media first but my hubby is the social butterfly in real life so it's no surprise he soon followed. Does he support me? Apparently he does but that's because I know how to write in third person and he told me his password. (He really does support me. I just have more time to share links.) He hasn't joined the blogesphere yet. I thought he was going to since I was talking about the new direction my blog is taking and he said, "Hey when you have some time would you ..." I sat with bated breath. "Like to take a ceramics class?" I think randomly changing subjects (and some changes have been way out in left field) is written in the fine print on the back of his Man Card and I just accept it.

  4. Official Man Card? That's great! And, of course the moustache is a perfect complement to it.

  5. I started blogging a month ago and my husband is my reluctant editor in chief! He's the techie in the family but LOATHES social media. I think it's because he's on the computer all day so when he comes home he wants to relax - not get back on the computer! I'm NOT a techie and blogging is my first step (after facebook) and I do struggle with learning it all. The most satisfying part of blogging is hearing my teenage daughter tell me how proud she is of me! :)

  6. There's a disclaimer on my husband's man-card stating he is exempt from participating in social media. However, he did venture out of the man-box and signed up for a Facebook account. It's been almost a year and he has yet to change the default profile picture.

  9. If I keep reading this blog, I'm afraid I'm going to have to tweet. I have a Twitter account, but I've resisted learning much about it so far. However, like you said, Edie keeps bringing it up. So, yes, I understand! :)
